The word 'ugly' is used freely, yet it is a loaded term: from the simply plain and unsightly to the repulsive and even offensive, definitions slide all over the place. Hovering around 'feared and dreaded', ugliness both repels and fascinates. But the concept of ugliness has a lineage that has long haunted our cultural imagination. Gretchen E. This study investigates the determinants of paternal investment by birth fathers and stepfathers. Inclusive fitness theory predicts higher parental investment in birth children than stepchildren, and this has consistently been found in previous studies. Here we investigate whether paternal investment varies with childhood co-residence duration and differs between stepfathers and divorced birth fathers by comparing the investment of (1) stepfathers, (2) birth fathers who are separated from the child’s mother, and (3) birth fathers who still are in a relationship with (...) her. Path analysis was conducted using cross-sectional data from adolescents and younger adults (aged 17–19, 27–29, and 37–39 years) from the German Family Panel (pairfam), collected in 2010–2011 (_n_ = 8326). As proxies of paternal investment, we used financial and practical help, emotional support, intimacy, and emotional closeness, as reported by the children. We found that birth fathers who were still in a relationship with the mother invested the most, and stepfathers invested the least. Furthermore, the investment of both separated fathers and stepfathers increased with the duration of co-residence with the child. However, in the case of financial help and intimacy, the effect of childhood co-residence duration was stronger in stepfathers than in separated fathers. Our findings support inclusive fitness theory and mating effort theory in explaining social behavior and family dynamics in this population. Furthermore, social environment, such as childhood co-residence was associated with paternal investment. (shrink)

Human diploid fibroblasts have a finite proliferative lifespan in culture, at the end of which they are ararrested with G1 phase DNA contents. Upon serum stimulation, senescent cells are deficient in carrying out a subset of early signal transduction events such as activation of protein kinase C and induction of c‐fos. Later in G1, they uniformly fail to express late G1 genes whose products are required for DNA synthesis, implying that they are unable to pass the R point. Failure to (...) pass the R point may occur because senescent cells are unable to phosphorylate the retinoblastoma protein, owing to the accumulation of inactive complexes of cyclin E/Cdk2 and possibly cyclin D/Cdk4. Senescent cells contain high amounts of p21, a potent cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor whose levels are also elevated in cells arrested in G1 following DNA damage, suggesting that both arrests might share a common mechanism. Cell aging is accompanied by a progressive shortening of chromosomal telomeres, which could be perceived by the cells as a form of DNA damage that gives rise to the signals that inactivate the cell cycle machinery. Neste artigo eu revisito a minha tese de doutoramento em antropologia social: “Esclavage et Inventions Spirituelles Afro-Brésiliennes: Du Vudum Lebabimibome aux Contes Populaires”, onde tentamos demonstrar um dos impactos marcantes da escravização na história dos povos africanos e afrodescendentes, como este fato marcou a vida espiritual e intelectual das diasporas nas Américas, especialmente da brasileira. Mostramos como estas populações dialogaram entre si, apropriaram-se e transformaram os valores culturais dos povos que as subjugaram. Adaptando-se aos novos quadros-sociais souberam preservar suas memórias (...) espirituais criando assim intermediários sagrados como o do Seja Hundê, Candomblé jeje da Bahia, o vudum Lebabimibome, híbrido do Mensageiro das religiões ancestrais fon e iorubá, Exu-Legbá e de um macaco. Pela adoção desta nova manifestação religiosa, esses povos souberam estrategicamente reciclar ao mesmo tempo uma velha idéia construída pelos colonizadores europeus sobre os africanos e seus descendentes, associando-os a macacos, vendo-os como o elo entre o homen e o animal. Para escapar à escravidão grupos de africanos utilizaram mímicas como meio de comunicação com os estrangeiros. Pelas artimanhas dos macacos dos contos populares, a vida social dos escravizados e dos livres subalternos é também contada e preservada, tranformando-os em verdadeiros arquivos históricos. (shrink)

La Bioética actual, que colabora en la búsqueda de nuevos horizontes para el desarrollo humano y hunde sus raíces en el progreso científico y en el saber ético, no debería olvidar que existe una gran diversidad de planteamientos. De fondo está la doble alternativa del «deontologismo» y del «teleologismo»... A partir de esos dos planteamientos generales se configuran las orientaciones en el campo de la Bioética actual. El prevalente, sobre todo en el mundo anglosajón, es el llamado «principialismo». LA BIOÉTICA (...) Y EL PRINCIPIO DE SOLIDARIDAD contribuye a consolidar la teoría de los principios bioéticos desde una óptica cristiana. La contemporaneidad es facticidad sin sentido, un “espacio de crisis” donde al “ocultamiento de Dios” (teología) le corresponde “la imposibilidad del Absoluto” (filosofía), y a ambos les son correlativas la imposición de un “universo infinito e inestable” (ciencia) y la consecuente pérdida de significancia (semiótica) que implican el vacío y las ausencias. Esa contemporaneidad es asimismo preludio que inaugura la emergencia hegemónica de la efectividad (tecnología), al costo de una debacle espiritual que tiene consecuencias trágicas para la vida y la (...) convivencia humanas. El agotamiento de las dimensiones imaginarias o no de ese universo, determinadas por las repeticiones inexorables de su geografía máxima y mínima, o la imposibilidad de progresar “más allá de la inmanencia” que reitera los recorridos reales y virtuales por la materia, proyecta nefastos efectos desexistenciarios sobre una humanidad que se hunde en la facticidad sin sentido y pervierte cualquier posibilidad de conocimiento, valor y virtud. La emergencia de novedosas modalidades de subjetividad, que atentan contra la existencia colectiva de comunidades, culturas y modos de vida, tienen directa relación con originales formas de reproducción del capital (economía) y modos traumáticos para realizar el prometeico sueño de producción de poder privado (política). También influye de manera decisiva la vigencia de un sistema de poder tecnocrático que sustituye “lo real” por virtualidades e impone una “convivencia” determinada por flujos digitales efímeros e inconsistentes. Esta obra demuestra que tales cuestiones económicas o políticas, científicas o técnicas, lejos de ser contradictorias con un tratamiento teológico o filosófico de la realidad, dependen de la previa respuesta de éste a los problemas elementales que la ciencia y la tecnología deben tener por resueltos antes de aplicar sus progresos por más elocuentes que estos pudieran parecer. Y tal demostración, en el presente texto, no gira en el vacío sino que perdura fundamentada en un recorrido ejemplificador a través de las diversas culturas “occidentales” que han predominado, primero en la misión de “ordenar a la Humanidad” en el tiempo y el espacio, para luego desatar la tragedia que signa un porvenir de convulsiones y pérdidas. Un “mundo” llega a su fin y las formas y elementos que lo sostenían se degradan fungiendo una transición hacia nuevas dimensiones de un “futuro” donde el hombre será un mendigo de lo inexorable. Sólo la conciencia plena del colapso y las causas que lo generan puede abrir una herida en ese futuro a favor del ser humano, evitando la pérdida de su condición de persona y de las virtudes propias que pueden salvarlo. La búsqueda de la unidad en el ámbito doctrinal, espejo e instrumento de la unidad de la Iglesia, es un elemento recurrente en la obra de Jean Gerson (1363 - 1429), renombrado teólogo y canciller de la Universidad de París entre el siglo XIV y el XV. La insistencia sobre el concepto de unidad es transmitida por una constante reflexión sobre el rol y sobre el modo de la escritura teológica. Gerson identifica métodos precisos y modelos a seguir con el (...) fin de explicar algunas oscuridades de la Escritura con claridad y precisión, y sin riesgo para la integridad de la doctrina. Parte fundamental de la reflexión sobre la escritura teológica es la discusión sobre la posibilidad de usar la lengua vulgar, una posibilidad que el canciller parisino niega de forma lapidaria, estigmatizando la confusión lingüística que inevitablemente conduce no solo a la incomprensión recíproca, sino a la ruptura de una correspondencia entre términos y conceptos que hunde sus raíces en una consolidada y plurisecular tradición teológica en latín. El presente artículo se propone estudiar la reflexión de Gerson sobre la lengua, sobre los métodos y sobre la selección de los modelos en el ámbito de la escritura teológica académica, en el marco más amplio de la búsqueda de la unidad en el ámbito doctrinal, elemento necesario para perseguir la unidad de la Iglesia _tout court_. En este texto analizaremos el decir filosófico zubiriano con el que pretende expresar la realidad de modo pleno y adecuado. En esto nos daremos cuenta de un grave y radical problema: la lengua que le ha sido dada social e históricamente al filósofo, la lengua en la que vive y se mueve intelectivamente y la lengua en la que quiere expresarse filosóficamente no coinciden en nada. La primera, la lengua vivencial, es una lengua románica y, por tanto, hunde sus raíces (...) en el indoeuropeo; en cambio, la segunda, la lengua filosófica, está incardinada desde la estructura lingüística semítica. ¿Por qué Zubiri busca acusar con tanto afán la realidad de un modo semítico y no lo hace en el indoeuropeo que habla y piensa? Aquí radica toda la cuestión fundamental que debemos analizar. A pesar de todas las dificultades que traerá para el desarrollo, claridad y divulgación del pensamiento zubiriano, se prefiere insistir rotundamente en el uso de la estructura semítica para expresar la realidad). Esta postura radical del pensador no es un mero capricho, sino una necesidad que se le impone (por lo menos, así lo piensa él). Y se le impone en y por la realidad misma que aprehende sentientemente. A raíz de esto, pensamos que Zubiri puede ser considerado como un pensador posmoderno". (shrink)

EL LIBRO QUE PRESENTAMOS nace a partir de un proyecto de investigación y cooperación financiado por la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo, Apoyo a la formación de formadores y de investigadores en educación en Centroamérica, en el campo de la Teoría de la Educación. El objetivo final del proyecto ha sido la creación de un Grupo Internacional de investigación en temas de Teoría de la Educación, formado por profesores de Facultades de Educación de Universidades centroamericanas y españolas. (...) Entre las numerosas tareas que se han encomendado a dicho grupo una de ellas ha sido la de elaborar un texto de Teoría de la Educación para uso de estudiantes de grado. Todos los miembros del grupo son profesores universitarios y, por lo mismo, se ven implicados en la necesidad de elaborar disciplinas académicas que presenten y organicen, de manera sistemática, campos de contenidos actualizados. Todos esos campos de conocimiento se refieren a problemas que la educación y la formación presentan y que la época histórica resalta como particularmente relevantes. Pero, también, cada uno de ellos matiza la consideración de esos problemas desde las necesidades de los colectivos humanos con los que se encuentra comprometido. Son esas necesidades las que proporcionan la perspectiva desde la que llevamos a cabo nuestros estudios e investigaciones que, a su vez, suponen el capital en base al cual cooperar con el grupo en la transferencia de conocimiento y de resultados desde un punto de vista global y, más particularmente, en la elaboración de este texto. De este modo, el grupo, y el texto que presentamos, ha quedado aglutinado desde el interés común por la investigación y la reflexión sobre las cuestiones que la formación de los seres humanos plantea en los diferentes contextos de actividad pedagógica en los que cada uno de ellos se ve profesional y académicamente envuelto. Desde cada uno de esos contextos, afloran preguntas que enriquecen la perspectiva global desde la que interpretar los fenómenos educativos. No tomar en consideración las sensibilidades que alimentan los contextos particulares de formación puede llevar a que el tópico de la globalidad, derivado de las nuevas formas de transferencia de información, potencialmente valiosas, induzca formas de exclusión, intelectual y socialmente perniciosas. Porque podría llevar a tratar de construir una teoría general sobre la educación en la que se marginan situaciones reales, historias formativas que, por quedar excluidas, parcializan la perspectiva general, desde la que la formación de los seres humanos debe ser interpretada, por responsabilidad cognitiva. Pero, también las urgencias reflexivas y prácticas locales pueden justificar dejar de lado problemas que empobrecen el horizonte intelectual de la investigación posible y el estudio posible. Dos de estas sensibilidades quedaron explícitas desde el principio en el seno del grupo y marcan el devenir del texto. La primera se ponía de manifiesto desde países latinoamericanos donde la lucha contra el analfabetismo, la elevación cultural de la población adulta, constituye un objetivo prioritario en vistas al desarrollo cultural y social de la población; desde ellos, la movilización cultural de la comunidad resaltaba la importancia de las políticas educativas denominadas informales y el poliformismo necesario de los sistemas de acreditación cultural. Ello implica, para la reflexión teórica global sobre la formación, que el concepto de educación informal adquiere una relevancia teórica que todavía no ha sido asumida suficientemente, aunque se haya generalizado el concepto de educación a lo largo de la vida. Así como la urgencia general de reconsiderar globalmente las formas de acreditación cultural y la necesidad de mecanismos flexibles de reincorporación a los sistemas formales. Globalmente se advierte la importancia del concepto de cultura sostenible, porque en todos los países se presentan graves problemas culturales, de una u otra naturaleza, que sobrepasan la capacidad de los sistemas formales, mostrando que la formación, en vistas al comportamiento participativo y responsable, debe ser asumida como compromiso de toda la Comunidad, como un carácter de la ciudadanía madura. Esto lleva a reinterpretar y expandir el propio concepto de políticas culturales y a expandir el concepto de gobernabilidad; porque la promoción de la calidad de vida de las comunidades no depende únicamente de las políticas económicas, dado que globalmente no pueden garantizar la calidad moral del compromiso ciudadano. La segunda sensibilidad se ponía de manifiesto desde los miembros del grupo que trabajan en entornos de discapacidad o en entornos vitales vulnerados: disminuidos físicos o mentales, sujetos que han padecido maltrato o condicionados por la enfermedad. Si la formación es un requerimiento vital de todos los seres humanos, ese requerimiento donde mejor refleja su urgencia es precisamenteen las situaciones en las que queda más aparente su vulneración; por limitaciones históricas, biológicas o sociales. Son esas situaciones las que muestran, descarnadamente, que la formación compromete el proceso general de la humanización posible de cada ser humano. Estas situaciones deben incorporarse a la perspectiva antropológica general sobre la educación, desde el principio y por principio. Son esas situaciones, también, las que ilustran, por principio, que el proceso de formación forma parte del género de las acciones humanitarias, cuya consideración es indispensable para un proceso de humanización sostenible. Y son esas situaciones, marginadas o escamoteadas en la reflexión global, y que, de una u otra manera, se entreveran en todos los grupos humanos, en todas las culturas, en todos los territorios, las que delatan los puntos críticos por los que la sensibilidad moral detecta los aspectos insostenibles de la cultura, porque desvelan la vulnerabilidad y la vulneración de la condición humana. Profundizar en las razones y en los argumentos que justifican en la condición humana la plasticidad, que hace posible la vida saludable, en sentido global y pleno, lleva a la mejor comprensión de las razones por las que la condición humana, las condiciones de humanidad de la vida de los seres humanos, es vulnerable y puede ser vulnerada. La reflexión teórica y práctica sobre la formación, sobre la educación, busca descubrir las condiciones reales, de posibilidad y de límite, en las que en cada caso el proceso de humanización es posible y el compromiso humanitario es realizable. La reflexión sobre la formación, que busca perfeccionar el comportamiento humano, no puede soslayar la realidad aparente y generalizada por la que muchos seres humanos endurecen su sensibilidad, generan el maltrato o se satisfacen con la maldad. Es esta globalidad de perspectiva por la que el Grupo de Investigación manifestó y manifiesta estar interesado; al ponerla de manifiesto, comprobó que para alimentarla racionalmente debía situarse en un contexto interdisciplinar. Comprobó que la necesidad de alimentarla era poco discutible; pero, también comprobó, al mismo tiempo, que el esfuerzo intelectual necesario para implementarla era enormemente exigente. Que, por responsabilidad cognitiva, el investigador de la educación debe fomentar la misma apertura, intelectualmente abierta, que fomenta en sus estudiantes cuando le propone formación integral. La investigación en teoría de la educación reclama profundizar tanto en los mecanismos y procesos implicados en las mentes que se forman; profundizar, depurar y actualizar los contenidos de la formación que se propone; profundizar, depurar y actualizar en la gestión de los escenarios sociales reales en los que la formación se promueve. Es abrumadora la tarea; pero, también es capaz de satisfacer la más exigente de las curiosidades intelectuales. Exige una actitud abierta para el estudio, aunque las exigencias metodológicas de la investigación requieran de precisión y especialización en los problemas. Acogidos estos objetivos para elaborar el texto, el Grupo de Investigación ha tomado conciencia de la pluralidad de las líneas de investigación en las que cada uno se encuentra comprometido y de la necesidad de la reconstrucción permanente de su personal perspectiva global, mediante el respeto y la consideración pluridisciplinar de las aportaciones de otros de cara a la elaboración del texto final que presentamos. Ha quedado patente en la reflexión colectiva del grupo que las urgencias de responsabilidad local y personal consumían tiempo de reflexión abundante y que, frecuentemente, las demandas de proximidad limitaban la perspectiva, incluso razonablemente. Al confrontar las perspectivas personales elaboradas desde posiciones locales y personales diferentes se pudo advertir que el macroscopio necesario para reflexionar la formación de los seres humanos, la perspectiva global desde la que considerar la formación de los seres humanos, ha de encontrarse en los formadores, en los investigadores de la educación, en permanente estado de construcción; precisamente por hacerse sensible a todas las formas de exclusión. El Grupo de Investigación se propuso iniciar su recorrido, planteándose, desde la pluralidad de perspectivas personales, y en el marco de una sensibilidad abierta hacia la globalidad de la necesidad de la formación para todos los seres humanos, no tratando de construir un tratado cerrado, sino un programa abierto aunque fuese incompleto. Inició su andadura haciendo preguntas. Todos los miembros del grupo presentaron cuestiones por las que, desde su personal preocupación intelectual, se consideraban interpelados. Entre ellas destacamos las siguientes: • ¿Cuál es la importancia de la teoría de la educación en el momento actual? • ¿Existen las ciencias de la educación? • ¿Cómo integrar lo filosófico y lo pedagógico en el pensamiento educativo? • ¿En qué consiste elaborar una teoría de la educación cívica? • ¿Condiciones o características que debe tener un problema para considerarlo problema educativo del que se encargue la teoría de la educación? • ¿Por qué los seres humanos necesitan cultura para vivir? • ¿Por qué la cultura necesita ser acreditada en las comunidades de prácticas? • ¿Cómo se hace un malvado? • ¿Qué puede aportar la teoría de la educación a la construcción de una cultura sostenible? • ¿Cuáles han sido las principales corrientes internacionales de la teoría de la educación? • ¿Qué diferencia hay entre lo que hace un maestro y un músico cuando intentan enseñar música? • ¿Dónde está la cualidad educativa del trabajo de un profesor? • ¿Cómo cambia la concepción de aprendizaje en una cultura digital? • ¿Qué teoría de la educación y visión de ser humano para qué desarrollo? • ¿Hay una teoría de la educación para la educación no formal? • ¿Cuál es la teoría educativa que explica los procesos en los ámbitos no escolarizados? • ¿A quién le sirve la teoría educativa, al docente o al estudiante? • ¿Cuándo el formador de formadores está preparado para un cambio de actitud? • ¿Tiene vigencia la estructura escolar tal y como la conocemos? • ¿Hacia dónde va la educación? • ¿Qué factores determinan los cambios educativos en la actualidad? • ¿Cuáles son los marcos explicativos sobre el fenómeno de la educación y cómo han evolucionado? • ¿Es el discurso teórico educativo objeto de discusión de todos? • ¿Cobertura o calidad de la educación? • ¿Calidad u oportunidad educativa? Desde este listado de numerosas preguntas se discutieron afinidades y se decidieron 9 temas sobre los que centrar el texto: el primero de ellos gira en torno a los fundamentos y al desarrollo del pensamiento en educación; el segundo se centra en los aspectos antropológicos implicados en una teoría de la educación; el tercer capítulo versa sobre la construcción histórica y el reto actual de la teoría de la educación. Por su parte, el capítulo cuarto cifra su reflexión en el discurso teórico de la educación ambiental, centrándose el capítulo quinto en la teoría de la educación contextualizada en la Sociedad de la Información y el Conocimiento. El capítulo sexto hunde sus raíces en la problemática que gira en torno a la gestión del cambio y la innovación en educación; la especificidad de la función docente y las relaciones entre conocimientos temáticos y conocimientos pedagógicos es la temática que da cuerpo al capítulo sétimo, siendo el capítulo ocho fruto de diversas reflexiones e investigaciones en torno a los conceptos de inclusión y exclusión teniendo el derecho humano a la educación como hilo conductor. Termina el libro con un capítulo dedicado a la complejidad de los conceptos de cobertura, calidad y equidad en educación. El objetivo del libro ha sido el de re-crear un conocimiento en teoría de la educación, fruto de las investigaciones y experiencias propias de cada uno de los miembros del equipo en nuestros respectivos campos y grupos de trabajo, para así comenzar a construir un conocimiento compartido con posibilidad de transferencia. El fruto final que presentamos, base de todo el proceso que queda por desarrollar, son las diferentes respuestas a una batería de preguntas que hanservido de antesala, no sólo al primer libro que hemos hecho conjuntamente sino, sobre todo, a lo que será la futura transferencia de conocimiento por parte de este grupo de investigación. Sólo nos queda agradecer a la AECID el apoyo prestado sin el cual este texto y sus futuros lectores nunca se hubieran conocido. (shrink)

La ética teleológica del terrorismo islamista (obra principalmente del filósofo Sayyid Qutb, que hunde sus raíces, a su vez, en la ideología de los Hermanos Musulmanes y en las reflexiones de Ibn Taymiyya y Abul alla Maududi) fija como meta suprema de la vida del hombre la complacencia de Allah y como medio principal para alcanzar esta meta la aplicación plena de la sharía o legislación divina. Se sustenta que esta aplicación, que configura la forma de vida del musulmán auténtico, (...) sólo se realizó de forma adecuada entre el año 622 y el 660, en tiempos del Profeta y los primeros cuatro califas (los llamados «píos antepasados» o «salaf»). De modo que la ética del terrorismo islamista prefigura como futuro una utopía regresiva , para la que fijan ahora como enemigos tanto a los infieles (el enemigo lejano) como a los apóstatas (el enemigo cercano). La interiorización de los principios de esta ética y, en general, de las ideas vertebradoras de la filosofía que constituye la base del terrorismo islamista (el denominado «qutbismo», del nombre de su principal representante, Sayyid Qutb) correlaciona con distorsiones cognitivas, emocionales y comportamentales que presentan los terroristas, en particular: percibirse y sentirse como soldados perte-necientes a una vanguardia de musulmanes auténticos, que cumplen con el deber religioso (el mandato divino) de combatir a quienes contribuyen con sus ideas y prácticas a la degradación de los valores del Islam, tal como se fijan en los textos sagrados. Se trata, consideran, de una guerra justa , porque, aun cuando tenga la apariencia de ofensiva, los soldados de la vanguardia la llevan a cabo en defensa del auténtico Islam , amenazado en su esencia por apóstatas e infieles. A sus aparentes víctimas, concluyen, habría que verlas, pues, como lo que realmente son: los verdugos de una forma de vida tan excelsa como la auténticamente musulmana. (shrink)

The ability to perceive the shapes of things as enduring through changes in how they stimulate our sense organs is vital to our sense of stability in the world. But what sort of capacity is shape constancy, and how is it reflected in perceptual experience? This paper defends a pluralist account of shape constancy: There are multiple kinds of shape constancy centered on geometrical properties at various levels of abstraction, and properties at these various levels feature in the content of (...) perceptual experience, governing patterns of apparent shape similarity. I propose that the varieties of shape constancy are subserved by the syntactic complexity of perceptual shape representations. By assigning discrete constituents to various abstract shape parameters, these representations attune us to the preservation of certain abstract shape properties through changes in more determinate shape properties. Finally, I draw broader lessons concerning the nature and function of perceptual constancy. (shrink)

The puzzle of cross-modal shape experience is the puzzle of reconciling the apparent differences between our visual and haptic experiences of shape with their apparent similarities. This paper proposes that we can resolve the cross-modal puzzle by reflecting on another puzzle. The puzzle of perspectival character challenges us to reconcile the variability of shape experience through shifts in perspective with its constancy. An attractive approach to the latter puzzle holds that shape experience is complex, involving both perspectival aspects and constant (...) aspects. I argue here that parallel distinctions between perspectival and constant aspects of shape experience arise in sight and touch, and that perspectival aspects are modality-specific while at least some constant aspects are constitutively multisensory. I then address a powerful challenge to the idea that aspects of spatial phenomenology are shared cross-modally. (shrink)

Growing concern has been expressed that we have entered a “post-truth” era in which each of us willfully believes whatever we choose, aided and abetted by alternative and social media that spin alternative realities for boutique consumption. A prime example of the belief in alternative realities is said to be acceptance of “conspiracy theories”—a term that is often used as a pejorative to indict claims of conspiracy that are so obviously absurd that only the unhinged could believe them. The epistemological (...) standard often involved in this indictment, however—the standard of “obvious” falsity—invites subjectivity in its application, because what is obviously false to one person can be common sense to another. This is not just a truism; considerable research suggests that people’s political beliefs, in general, and their acceptance or rejection of conspiracy theories in particular, tends in large part to be determined by partisan, ideological, and other priors. Perceptual constancy has played a significant role in philosophy of perception. It figures in debates about direct realism, color ontology, and the minimal conditions for perceptual representation. Despite this, there is no general consensus about what constancyis. I argue that an adequate account of constancy must distinguish it from three distinct phenomena:meresensory stability through proximal change, perceptualcategorizationof a distal dimension, and stability throughirrelevantproximal change. Standard characterizations of constancy fall short in one or more of these respects. I develop an account (...) of constancy that overcomes these problems. The account has two parts: an analysis of constancy mechanisms, and an analysis of the conditions under which a constancy capacity is exercised. I then employ this account to evaluate whether constancy is a necessary condition for perceptual representation, as some have conjectured. I argue that explanatory practice in perceptual psychology fails to support this view. Rather, it fits better with the weaker principle that representation requires specific tracking of a distal dimension. (shrink)

Insight experiences are sudden, persuasive, and can accompany valuable new ideas in science and art. In this preregistered experiment, we aim to validate a novel visceral and continuous measure of insight problem solving and to test whether real-time and embodied feelings of insight can predict correct solutions. We report several findings. Consistent with recent work, we find a strong positive relationship between Aha moments and accuracy for problems that demand implicit processing. We also found that the intensity of the insight (...) experience further predicted the accuracy of solutions and participants naturally embodied the intensity of their insight experiences by squeezing the dynamometer more tightly. Intriguingly, this unintentional embodiment further predicted the accuracy of solutions. We suggest that the dynamometer complements previous measures by (1) simultaneously capturing both process and feeling in real-time, (2) highlights the value of measuring Aha moments on a continuum of intensity, and (3) firmly establishes that the impulsive feeling of Aha can carry information about the veracity of an idea. We discuss the findings in light of a recent theoretical account of how feelings of insight may act as a heuristic to select ideas from the stream of consciousness. (shrink)

Cognitive scientists have long known that the modalities interact during perceptual processing. Cross-modal illusions like the ventriloquism effect show that the course of processing in one modality can alter the course of processing in another. But how do the modalities interact in the specific domain of object perception? This paper distinguishes and analyzes two kinds of multisensory interaction in object perception. First, the modalities may bind features to a single object or event. Second, the modalities may cooperate when differentiating an (...) object or event from its surroundings. I critically evaluate evidence for various forms of multisensory binding. I then consider the case for multisensory differentiation. I argue that existing evidence for multisensory differentiation is inconclusive. I highlight ways that the issue might be empirically resolved. (shrink)

There are two aims of this paper: (1) to explore the affective dimensions of moral shock and how it relates to normative marginalization of those furthest from dominant society, but also, more specifically; (2) to articulate the trans experience of constantly being under moral attack because the dominant “world” normatively defines you out of existence. Toward these ends, I build on Katie Stockdale’s recent work on moral shock, arguing that moral shock needs to be contextualized to “worlds” of sense to (...) understand how marginalized people affectively experience shocking events. My focus is the trans experience of moral shock due to the way trans people are positioned outside of dominant society, creating the conditions to experience cyclical, chronic shock. These affective conditions point to a collective responsibility to ease the affective stress that the most marginalized experience. (shrink)

In this paper, it is argued that metaphysics, conceived as an inquiry into the ultimate nature of mind-independent reality, is a rationally indispensable intellectual discipline, with the a priori science of formal ontology at its heart. It is maintained that formal ontology, properly understood, is not a mere exercise in conceptual analysis, because its primary objective is a normative one, being nothing less than the attempt to grasp adequately the essences of things, both actual and possible, with a view to (...) understanding as far as we can the fundamental structure of reality as a whole. Accordingly, it is urged, the deliverances of formal ontology have a modal and epistemic status akin to those of other a priori sciences, such as mathematics and logic, rather than constituting rivals to the claims of the empirical sciences, such as physics. Christopher Hill's Perceptual experience is a must‐read for philosophers of mind and cognitive science. Here I consider Hill's representationalist account of spatial perception. I distinguish two theses defended in the book. The first is that perceptual experience does not represent the enduring, intrinsic properties of objects, such as intrinsic shape or size. The second is that perceptual experience does represent certain viewpoint‐dependent properties of objects—namely, Thouless properties. I argue that Hill's arguments do not establish the first thesis, and then I (...) raise questions about the Thouless‐property view and its role in Hill's defense of representationalism. (shrink)

Victoria’s Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017 (Vic) became the first state law to permit VAD in Australia under limited circumstances from June 2019. Before this, many palliative care physicians relied on the doctrine of double effect (DDE) to justify the use of pain relievers for terminally ill patients that were known to hasten death. The DDE claims that there is a morally significant difference between intending evil and merely foreseeing some bad side-effect will occur as a result of one’s actions. (...) This article argues that the legacy of the DDE is promoting inequitable access to VAD in Victoria due to the assumption that death represents an “evil” for the patient and that the intentions of physicians providing VAD cannot be trusted. The latter claim relies on two common objections to the DDE: the risk of “purifying the intentions” and the issue of “closeness” when evaluating moral acts under this theory. (shrink)

This research focuses on how research ethics committee and integrity board members discuss and decide on solutions to case scenarios that involve a dimension of research ethics or integrity in collaborative settings. The cases involved issues around authorship, conflict of interest, disregard of good scientific practice and ethics review, and research with vulnerable populations (children and neonates). The cases were set in a university, a hospital, or a research institute. In the research, we used a deductive qualitative approach with thematic (...) analysis. Twenty-seven research ethics committee and research integrity board members from 16 European countries and one country outside Europe participated. Participants represented natural and life sciences, social sciences, and humanities. They worked on cases involving ethical/integrity issues in six different constellations. Results show that experts apply key elements of ethical decision making, namely identification of ethical issues, stakeholders, guidelines, solutions, and own positionality, in dealing collaboratively with ethics/ integrity problems, and the nature of the application depends on the complexity of the case. Understanding how individuals knowledgeable in research ethics and integrity, in this case, individuals serving on research ethics committees and integrity boards, approach ethical/ moral issues can help to identify strategies that may be useful in the development of research ethics and integrity training for junior researchers who may benefit from learning professional strategies. There is a curious phenomenon where people from marginalized populations are taken to be arrogant when they show no signs of superiority. In effect, their actions are misconstrued, and their attitudes are rendered unintelligible. Given that arrogance is standardly taken to be a flaw in one’s moral character, understanding such misattributions should give us insight into the affective marginalization many people face. This talk aims to give a thorough exploration of arrogance under oppression. I argue that arrogance is a kind (...) of self-preoccupation that involves projecting one’s values, goals, and concerns onto others as if they were objective values, goals, and concerns. When the affectively marginalized communicate their self-respect through things like protest, people mistake that self-respect as self-preoccupation given how the affectively marginalized are constructed. Furthermore, given how affective marginalization not only inhibits how the marginalized are understood by others, but inhibits their own affective lives, I argue that taking up an arrogant attitude is not always morally vicious, but can be a beautiful form of political resistance but all things considered good. John Locke was one of the towering philosophers of the Enlightenment and arguably the greatest English philosopher. Many assumptions we now take for granted, about liberty, knowledge and government, come from Locke and his most influential works, _An Essay Concerning Human Understanding_ and _Two Treatises of Government_. In this superb introduction to Locke's thought, E.J. Lowe covers all the major aspects of his philosophy. Whilst sensitive to the seventeenth-century background to Locke's thought, he concentrates on introducing and assessing Locke in (...) a contemporary philosophical setting, explaining why he is so important today. Beginning with a helpful overview of Locke's life and times, he explains how Locke challenged the idea that the human mind and knowledge of the external world rested on innate principles, laying the philosophical foundations of empiricism later taken up by Berkeley and Hume. Subsequent chapters introduce and critically assess topics fundamental to understanding Locke: his theories of substance and identity, language and meaning, philosophy of action and free will, and political freedom and toleration. In doing so, he explains some of the more complex yet pivotal aspects of Locke's thought, such as his theory that language rests on ideas and how Locke's theory of personal identity paved the way for modern empirical psychology. Insufficient attention has been paid to the ways in which Newtonian conceptualizations of time encourage the view in contemporary psychology that only efficient causal explanations are viable, explanations that ultimately render meaningful, purposive, morally rich human actions and relationships illusory. In short, psychology’s pervasive adoption of Newtonian assumptions about time and causation renders the discipline incapable of understanding human behavior, its primary focus of study, in any but fundamentally inhuman ways. This paper aims (1) to provide a critique of the (...) Newtonian conception of time and its commitment to efficient causality, particularly as commonly present in contemporary psychological theory and practice, and (2) to examine the phenomenological account of time provided in the work of Emmanuel Levinas. Specifically, we will explore some of the ways in which Levinas’ account of time as fundamentally intersubjective provides an alternative conceptual grounding for understanding the therapeutic relationship as one of infinite ethical responsibility. Technology has advanced significantly over the past decades. Significant changes have occurred in the field of translation with the development of programs such as Google.translate and Yandex.translator. The presented applications are already being actively implemented in translation agencies to optimize translation activities, where written translations of documents, articles, annotations, etc. must be provided to customers as quick as possible. While working with popular science text, online programs help translators gain time, but this requires to edit the text. The artistic style (...) requires more concentration and dedication, because. the means of expression presented in it require taking into account the context and nuances of the use of certain units of language. Machine translation has the potential to become an indispensable assistant in the hands of a translator. This article discusses machine translation of expressive means, namely metaphors. The study is illustrated with examples and a comparative analysis of the translation of metaphorical units is carried out, the classification of metaphors is identified and an analysis is carried out with which means of expression the translator is able to cope with. The difficulties of translating metaphors are analyzed. (shrink)

Philosophers of race and other writers in the Black and Latinx intellectual traditions have remarked on what it is like to live under “the racial gaze,” to be shaped and limited by the way whites perceive us. However, little work has been spent developing how the racial gaze functions in whites’, and other racially privileged people’s, moral psychology. I argue in this paper that there is a morally objectionable way of perceiving people of color. This claim builds on an insight (...) from Iris Murdoch that our perception can be morally evaluable and extends it to issues of race. I articulate how racial stereotypes and misvaluing distort one’s perception of people of color and that these distortions are organizing around a dominant conception for race that plays an important role in the oppression of people of color. I believe understanding racist perception lays a foundation for understanding the moral dimensions of interpersonal (as opposed to structural) racism. (shrink)

Non‐Cartesian substance dualism is a position in the philosophy of mind concerning the nature of the mind‐body relation or, more exactly, the person‐body relation. Whereas Cartesian substance dualism takes subjects of experience to be necessarily immaterial and indeed nonphysical substances, non‐Cartesian substance dualism does not insist on this. This distinctive feature of non‐Cartesian substance dualism gives it certain advantages over Cartesian dualism, without compelling it to forfeit any of the intuitive appeal that attaches to its more traditional rival. In this (...) chapter, the author's own view is that the self is indeed a simple substance. The simplicity of the self goes some way toward explaining its unity, including the unity of consciousness that characterizes its normal condition. A divided consciousness is in principle consistent with self‐identity: what is not consistent with this is a radical disunity of beliefs and values, manifested in a radical inconsistency of thought and action. Cognitive scientists have focused too narrowly on the acquisition of data and on the methods to extract patterns from those data. We argue that a successful science of the mind requires widening our focus to include the problems being solved by cognitive processes. Frameworks that characterize cognitive processes in terms of instrumental problem‐solving, such as those within the evolutionary social sciences, become necessary if we wish to discover more accurate descriptions of those processes.

The field of Philosophy of Sport has been developing in Anglo-Saxon scholarship since the 1960s and since then has achieved considerable consolidation. However, this is a progressing field in Latin American countries like Brazil. This paper aims to analyse the trajectory of the Philosophy of Sport in Brazil, presenting an overview of its development since the 1980s and some prospects that have been generated since the turn of the century. In conclusion, the article points out that the field of Philosophy (...) of Sport in Brazil is in the process of disciplinary consolidation, presenting a plurality of agents, institutions and theoretical approaches in its structure. Manifestos brings together for the first time in English the manifestos written by Édouard Glissant and Patrick Chamoiseau between 2000 and 2009. Composed in part in the aftermath of Barack Obama's election in 2008, the texts resonate with the current context of divided identities and criticisms of multiculturalism. The individual texts grapple with concrete historical and political moments in France, the Caribbean, and North America. Across the manifestos, as well as two collectively signed op-eds, the authors engage with socio-political aspects (...) of climate catastrophe, resource extraction, toxicity, and neocolonialism. Throughout the collection, Glissant and Chamoiseau engage with key themes articulated through their poetic vocabulary, including Relation, globalization, globality (mondialité), anti-universalism, métissage, the tout-monde ("whole-world") and the tout-vivant ("all-living," including the relationship of humans to each other and "nature"), créolité and the creolization of the world, and the liberation from community assignations in response to individualism and neoliberal societies. Translated as the first volume in the Planetarities series with Goldsmiths Press, the themes of Manifestos resonate with the planetary as they work in response to contemporary forms of (economic) globalization, western capitalism, identity politics, and urban, digital and cosmic ecosystems, as well as the role of the poet-writer. A distinguishing feature of this publication is its interventional aspect, which prioritizes engaged scholarship and practice while demonstrating the relevance of the poetic in response to the urgencies of planetary crisis.
